The types of childcare roles we have:

Babysitting

Once you are an approved Rockmybaby® candidate, you can accept any babysitting bookings in your region via SMS or email. On acceptance of a booking, babysitters are expected to contact the family within 24 hours to introduce themselves.

Babysitting bookings are created by the family via our website and detail the location, time, and number, and ages of children. Bookings are then released to our network of approved babysitters in that region and are picked up by babysitters on a first-in, first-served basis. There is a minimum of three hours, and a maximum of four children per booking. The family pays the babysitter directly on completion of the booking the current regional hourly rate, unless otherwise stated. View babysitting rates. Travel allowance is not included unless stated in the booking.

A babysitter is advised to consider the travel involved prior to accepting a booking. Babysitting roles occur in locations such as the family home, hotels, holiday homes, events or corporate/business locations. In some circumstances, for instance, in the event of a corporate booking, Rockmybaby® Head office will pay you directly, as the company is invoiced by us.

Private Nanny

Families with primary aged children, or families that have pre-schoolers that choose not to participate in the Rockmybaby® home-based programme, are classified as seeking the services of a private nanny. Hourly nanny rates vary based on experience and range from minimum wage and above. Nanny rates are sometimes stated in the nanny job listing, or are otherwise, to be negotiated. As a nanny, the contract of employment is between you and the family, and you are either an employee of the family, or act as a private contractor to them.  Your individual employment agreement and job description is negotiated with the family.

Differences between a private nanny and a home-based nanny is:

  • Families employing a private nanny are charged a recruitment fee for the successful placement of the nanny with their family
  • Families employing private nannies do not access government subsidies (these are available to pre-schoolers enrolled in our home-based programme only)
  • Private nannies do not receive monthly support visits from a qualified Rockmybaby® visiting teacher
  • Private nannies mainly care for older children rather than pre-schoolers.

Nanny Home-based Care (pre-school children)

  • Nannies who are placed with families with pre-school aged children, are in one of our licenced areas, and have opted to participate in the Rockmybaby® home-based programme, receive the support of monthly visits from one of our qualified visiting teachers. Families comply with Ministry of Education requirements such as health & safety checks on their home
  • Nannies are committed to, and are supported in, providing an in-home programme with pre-school aged children by a designated visiting teacher
  • Nannies must hold a current child first aid certificate (or be in the process of obtaining/renewing one)
  • A visiting teacher will visit you once a month in the family’s home to support you with programme planning and provide professional support
  • Families can access government subsidies towards childcare costs
  • Nannies could work with up to 4 pre-schoolers at any one time (max 2 under two years). The hourly nanny rate is minimum wage or above, as stated in the job listing or negotiated with the family. Nannies are an employee of, or private contractor to the family. A nanny individual employment agreement and job description is offered and negotiated with the family.

Home-based Educator

  • Home-based educators could work with up to 4 pre-schoolers at any one time (max 2 under two years)
  • Home-based educators work in their own home
  • Home-based educators are self-employed. Rockmybaby® however supplies all the information and support you need to make this easy
  • Home-based educators are committed to providing an in-home programme with pre-school aged children
  • Home-based educators must hold a child first aid certificate, unit standard 25459 (or be in the process of obtaining/renewing prior to employment)
  • A visiting teacher will visit you once a month in your home to support you with programme planning and provide professional support
  • Professional development opportunities, activities, and excursions are available for Rockmybaby® home-based educators to participate in, in certain locations
  • Families in your care can access government subsidies towards childcare costs.

OSCAR (Out of School Care and Recreation)

A candidate can be an OSCAR Educator in their own home or in the family's home – home-based and in the community environment.

OSCAR Programmes are based on family needs and requirements for care – tailored specifically for the children by the care provider. OSCAR providers can work after school, or in the holidays, designing and running their own programme based on individual skill sets.

Rockmybaby® seeks candidates who are specialists in fields of music, tuition, life skills and sport coaching either formally or informally trained. OSCAR services can offer school collections (or from another location), and then provide tuition. Providers can offer short term or regular bookings to families, choosing their own working days and times - choices to suit their lifestyle and their own family obligations.

Live-in Nanny/Au Pair

A live-in nanny is the term used for a New Zealander working in a live-in nanny capacity, whereas an au pair is a foreign person, often young, who seeks a childcare and cultural exchange, for up to a year. Both roles need to meet the minimum wage or above and are subject to tax, board, and lodging deductions. The family on-pay a sum of money to the live-in nanny/au pair ‘for the pocket’. In both cases, the nanny/au pair lives with the family, with a separate bedroom and separate/shared bathroom provided by the family. Each role offers a different experience, and ages and number of children can vary. As per nannies above, live-in nannies/au pairs may be employed as a ‘private’ live-in nanny or au pair or be employed by a family participating in the Rockmybaby® home-based programme. The family may negotiate rate of pay ‘for the pocket’ to be paid to the live-in nanny /au pair, or there will be a pre-determined financial offer.
